Gavin, began showing interest in radio as a School boy, and would spend hours in his bedroom making radio shows, he would then inflict on his long suffering family who recommended Gavin see a psychiatrist.
After graduating from the National Broadcasting School in London, Gavin Secured his first job in Italy working on a tourist station, serving Monaco and the South of France. Management was not impressed and fired him after only two weeks.
Back in England Gavin, got a job doing the Six hour overnight show Night flight on Devon air. Alone in the studios in Exeter he would regularly hear, the famous ‘Devon Air Ghost’ walking around the hallways and slamming doors. The building had been an old people’s home, before becoming a radio station and yes you could still sometimes get whiffs of the bleach and urine smells.
Then it was off to Radio Caroline, one of Britain’s famous radio ships, where Gavin presented The Breakfast Show three miles off the coast of Kent..…After getting tired of the constant storms, Gavin headed to beautiful Normandy in France joining the lovely team of Contact 94, a radio station serving the islands of Jersey and Guernsey. One of the bosses was a really nice man, who bought his pretty girlfriend to stay with the team in France one weekend. After a night in a guest house, she was found stumbling around bumping into things. It was thought that she was drunk! But she wasn’t. She had forgotten to bring her contact lens case and had to put them in a glass of water next to the bed. When she awoke the glass was empty, the Contact 94 boss had drank them by mistake!
Galaxy Radio in Bristol was the next stop for Gavin where he was manhandled by the old 70’s group Racey. They were one of the star acts at the Galaxy Radio Party in the park, they decided to mime their complete show, the vocals, the drums the guitars, everything…they gave technicians a DAT tape of their songs and took to the stage with great applause. They then signaled for the tape to be played and expertly started to mime ‘Run Around Sue’….sadly something was wrong with either the tape or the player and it started to cut out and speed up and slow down, the crowd started laughing and Racey stormed off stage in a terrible mood, only to be met by Gavin, who stupidly asked; ‘How did it go?’ It was then he was flung aside like a rag doll!
After being fired from Galaxy it was off to Napa Fm in Cyprus, where Gavin fell in love with a station from Lebanon that a lot of people were listening to…… Radio One. On holiday in Lebanon he tried out for the station and got a show…. Planet Love. Gavin then moved to Mornings and has been presenting Lebanon’s most listened to Breakfast show: ‘Gavin ford in the Morning’ for twelve years.
